Crumpets, Fadge and Plunkets
This 1913 Five Roses Flour cookbook came in a few days ago in sad shape, but lovable just the same. You'll find rusks, scones, crumpets, fadge and plunkets, plus quite a few other pastries and treats whose names are not familiar. I understand it was reprinted in 2000, and am waiting to see if it is an exact reprint, or updated.
I'll be posting many of these recipes at our Old Recipes Found blog because they are unusual and sound dreamy. First post is "Oatmeal Jam-Jams", a warm cookie sandwich made with oatmeal and figs.
The intro each chapter gives tips and hints and that are a joy to read. The Jam-Jam chapter, entitled "Small Cakes of All Kinds" encourages using a wide variety of interesting ingredients including, macaroni alphabets, sugared caraway seeds and cardamom seeds.
Our Canadian customers are fond of all of the Five Roses Cookbooks, which are all difficult to find.
A Guide to Cooking with Five Roses Flour, was revised and reprinted many times, the earliest I know of is 1938. We often have the 1962 version.
Some other Five Roses Cookbooks include, "Streamlined Recipes with Five Roses Flour", 1960 and a version in French: "La Cuisiniere Five Roses".
